Shovel or Else
NY1 reports the city will be out today writing tickets for anyone who hasn't shoveled the snow from their sidewalk yet. $100 for the first offenders; $350 for repeat scofflaws. Plus, the city is encouraging people to report non-shoveled walks via 311. But really, it's not the snow that's so bad - it's that layer of slick ice lurking below. I've gained weight this winter just to provide extra cushioning for when I fall. (Yeah, that's why I'm not skipping dessert.)

Welcome to Goat Town
"Gotham," you and your shivering little pah-toot may be surprised to learn, is Anglo-Saxon for the term "goat town." Author Washington Irving (he of "The Legend of Sleep Hollow," "Rip Van Winkle," Irving Place and (currently) the most violent school in Manhattan,) was the first to slap the moniker on NYC in his story "Salmagundi." Details from Gotham Gazette's Mother Knickerbocker column.
